The Cousins’ Letter… April/May, 2008 edition A production of Chicago’s Greek Media Club www.GreekMediaClub.com
GREAT DRAKE! Mucho kudos to the 80 or 90 (still converting to metrics, sorry) who showed March 27 for our last event, held at The Drake Hotel. Special thanks to Vicky Poulos, The Drake’s marketing guru, for her assistance as well. We were pleased to have join us for the first time both Petros Kogiones and his lovely wife Contessa Kogiones. Petros, former owner of the legendary “Diana’s Opaa!” restaurant in Greektown, is one of the few that can lay claim to the moniker “mayor of Greektown.” Contessa operates a chic couture boutique on Oak Street. This dynamic duo is always on the haut culture circuit and their names are often found in the society pages of the major Chicago daily newspapers. Also joining us at The Drake was ABC7 and CLTV broadcaster Lou Canellis, who clued us in to Vicky. Thanks for the reference, Lou. Incidentally, the Chicago Sun-Times on April 9 ran a picture and article on Steve Spanos, who’s been a waiter at The Drake for 50 years! Check out http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/885010,CST-NWS-waiter09.article. Thanks also to GMC regular Nick Scoutaris, a marketing consultant and photographer, for the pics, which are posted at www.greekmediaclub.com.
DYNAMIC FILM DEBUTS: It was a who’s who of the Chicago Greek community March 31 at the pre-screening of the new documentary film “The Journey: The Greek American Dream” at the Art Institute of Chicago. Filmmaker Maria Iliou uncovered “a wealth of previously unseen archival photographic and film footage from over fifty public and private collections which will tell the fascinating history of Greek immigrants to the United States,” read the playbill. Historian Alexander Kitroeff is one of the film’s main commentators. The screening was sponsored by Calamos Investments, Greek America magazine, Faith: An Endowment for Orthodoxy and Hellenism, and Proteus Foundation. GA publisher Gregory Pappas, a GMC regular, served as emcee by offering opening remarks and introducing the filmmaker as well as famous author Harry Mark Petrakis, who addressed a crowd estimated at 500. His Eminence Archbishop Iakavos was in attendance, along with Bishop Demitrios. Other notables in attendance include: businessmen/philanthropists Michael Jaharis and John P. Calamos Sr.; Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias; Secretary General of Information of Greece, Panos Livadas; Nicholas Melas, formerly the longtime president of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of greater Chicago; and The Greek Star‘sFrank Kamberos, co-founder of Treasure Island Foods, who is also a Hellenic Museum board member and benefactor. The GMC’s Spiro Papadopoulos and Terry Poulos were also on hand for the event. For more on the film, log on to www.thejourneygreekamericandream.org
JIMMY D HEADLINES MAY 3 FUNDRAISER: Our very own Jimmy Damonwww.jimmydamon.com on May 3 will be the featured singer at the annual Jazz for Youth benefit event at the Park West Theatre in Chicago. Damon, who was the only singer authorized by the “chairman of the board” himself to sing the songs of Frank Sinatra during the late singer’s lifetime, will be joined at the Park West by actess Kim Coles (“Frazier,” “Living Single”, “In Living Color”), who will emcee the event. Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown is one of the honorary chairs. Others to participate include celeb art dealer Harry Lennox and Tribune entertainment/nightlife and travel columnist Art Sims. Other attractions include blackjack, Texas Hold ‘em, craps and roulette, live and silent auction. The program is expected to raise $100,000 for services and jobs for low-income youth, and educational training programs. Purchase tickets at www.jfychicago.org or call (312) 499-4778 x 136, or email .
JOIN US MAY 14: You are all welcome to join many of us GMCers Wednesday, May 14 to support our “cousin,” documentary filmmaker Marianthi Bumbaris, as she debuts the trailer of an intimate and long-overdue documentary (working title) “Children of the Storm: Children of the Greek Civil War." This a story of how the displaced youth of Greece were able to maintain a child's inherant love for life despite being raised in foreign lands under extraordinatry circumstances. The fundraising event will be held at Katerina’s Nightclub (1920 W. Irving Park Rd., near Damon Ave. www.katerinas.com) from 6:30-Midnight, with complimentary appetizers served until 7:30. There will be raffle prizes, a silent auction, live Greek music and a dance performance. Admission is $15. Marianthi’s own father was among the refugees and fled with his siblings, ultimately welcomed in Czechoslovakia where the children lived in state-operated, abandoned German castles. Now, a Greek-Czech cultural group is welcoming the Children of the Storm back for a 60-year reunion. All proceeds of the fundraiser will go toward capturing this momentous occasion, interviewing witnesses and former refugees, and filming the childhood homes of survivors. Marianthi is a University of Chicago grad who was a reporter for an NBC affiliate during the 2004 Athens Olympics. “I hope to capture stories that have long been marginalized," said Marianthi. "It is time to give the children a voice and a chance to share their stories with people across the world.” For more information, or to buy ad space in the sponsor book or donate auction items, email Marianthi at .
HATZIGIANNIAS ADDS MAY 14 CHICAGO DATE: One show wasn't enough. The May 11 Michalis Hatzigiannis concert sold out, so our "cousin" Mario Pappas at Asteria Entertainment is promoting an encore May 14! This is one HOT-zigiannis ticket so act quickly! Go to www.asterialive.com or www.hatzigiannistour.com. Hatzigiannis performs live both nights at the Alhambra Palace, 1240 W. Randolph. Check out other Mario ventures www.greekchicago.com and www.chicagomixmasters.com.
MORE FILM: GMC regular Jerry Vasilatos, an up-and-coming filmmaker whose credits include producing for The History Channel, among others, has secured the rights for a film adaptation of an original story by Sara Cooyer Caldwell titled “Butcher‘s Dozen.” Vasilatos and the writer are both creating the screenplay and GMCer Zoe Triantafillou is executive producing the project. The story involves a “Silence of the Lambs” style thriller, with the “dark edge of `Seven’ and `Holloween.’ Intricate plot twists abound. Producers are currently soliciting investors for the project. More later. For now, visit Jerry’s website www.ninestar.com or email or .
AND EVEN MORE FILM: Thanks to our LA gal pal, native Chicagoan Patricia Kara (model #9 on NBC‘s “Deal or No Deal”) for bringing this to our attention. There’s yet another “Chicagoan” who’s getting into the film business. Dr. Nikos Linardakis, a Naperville native now based in Salt Lake City, is trying to make a big-screen adaptation of a Harry Mark Petrakis novel. More later. Suffice to say, this is one go-getter. He was recently featured on the front cover of NEO, the Greek magazine. Nikos, who also started a successful pharmaceutical company, was described by Neo as a “doctor, author, entrepreneur, movie-maker.” If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it is to local Greeks. Nikos is the younger brother of John Linardakis, the longtime front-man for the Linardakis Greek band.
AUTHOR ON WGN: Army veteran James Magellas, a resident of Texas, was a guest March 7th on WGN Extension 720 with host Milt Rosenberg. Magellas and fellow soldiers who fought with him in the 82nd Airborne during WWII were interviewed about their “struggles and perils encountered by all the men in H Company of the 504th parachute regiment.” Magellas wrote a fascinating book about the experience, titled “All the Way to Berlin.” Some of the accounts go well beyond bravery. These men were nothing less than heroic of gargantuan proportion. Magellas was the 82nd Airborne’s most decorated officer and the book “details his tour of duty, from the beaches of Anzio in 1943 to Operation Market Garden in Holland and on through the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-45.” We here at the GMC spoke with James and obtained a copy of his book for review. We’ll let you know more at a later time (AKA, after we find time to read it). Read Jim's bio at www.allthewayto.wordpress.com/about/.
INVITE TO MAY 22 STUDIO EVENT: Our own Nancy Keres extends an invite to GMCers to attend the open house celebrating the 25th anniversary of Show Department, the parent company of Resolution Digital Studios, where Keres is an exec. May 22 is the event. Check out www.rsdchicago.com and RSVP to . RSD is located at 2226 W. Walnut, Chicago. You can also phone (312) 846-4226. RSD specializes in video/audio services and equipment.
GREEKS CONTINUE TO ROCK! Our GMC “cousin” Dimitri Kontos, bass guitarist for the on-the-rise band “KK and the Flying Hamsters of Doom,“ informs us the band just released their second album “My Great Escape.” The CD combines the musical genres of alternative, hard rock, classical, progressive, and heavy metal. Visit www.myspace.com/kkfhod. The lead singer, "KK" Kim, has attended a couple of our events. She's `media' too, serving as an advertising exec. KK is a very savvy and talented gal!
DJ CANELLIS REPORTS: Our “cousin,” DJ Peter Canellis, the brother of our Lou, recently served as an extra in the upcoming “Public Enemies” flick, currently filming in Chicago and starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale, among others. He’s also helping to promote DJs around the world with his podcasts. Log on to www.djpetercanellis.com and also check out http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=268584742.
AD AGE WRITER MUSES ON GREEK EASTER: Ad Age magazine reporter Aris Georgiadis offers an amusing, tongue-in-cheek take on Greek Easter coming so late this year after “American Easter.” Check it out at http://adage.com/bigtent/post?article_id=126513. Note to all who’ve previously celebrated their Easter: It’s a New Testiment/Old Testiment calendar issue, but we're told it really is impossible to celebrate Easter until Passover has passed over. Check your biblical facts! Thanks to marketing consultant and GMCer Gary Crawford for passing the Ad Age item along.
MANTIS POISED FOR NOISE: He’s “our guy,” Nick Mantis. Video/TV producer in the greater Chicago and NW Indiana region, and one of the new GMC directors. Mantis, who has created a series of regional video websites chronicling local entertainment and news, is also a top video producer for Chase Bank and many other corporate clients. He’s currently working on his own original, personal project involving a children’s book about sports (can’t say any more for now). Suffice to say, Mantis is poised to make some noise in the entertainment and environmental industries in the years to come. Check out www.aroundtheregion.tv and other videos at http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.channel&ChannelID=32910152.
NEW MAGAZINE ISSUES: The Spring, 2008 issues of both Greek Circle and Greek America magazines were recently published (both have headquarters in Chicago). GC’s issue centers on Greek dance, and GA’s page-one feature article is an interview with actress Olympia Dukakis, written by GA publisher Gregory Pappas. GC’s publisher is Alexa Ganakas. Visit www.greekcircle.com and www.greekamerica.net.
PREPARED FOR MOM’S DAY? May 11 is right around the corner. Get with the program, people! Have you purchased your Mother’s Day gift yet? Check out www.spiralartdesign.com. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRIS! Chicago’s own Chris Janus, a noted author whose book “Miss 4th of July” was made into a movie, celebrated his 97th birthday in March. His latest book (he has 10 already), “The World of Chris Janus, You Can Do It Too,” just got green-lighted by its publisher. Chris is the oldest active member of the Chicago Harvard Club and is a former president as well. He also writes for The Greek Star newspaper www.thegreekstar.com.
DAVLANTES PROTÉGÉ GETS CSI TREATMENT: We call him her protégé only because NBC5 Chicago anchor/reporter Anna Davlantes once threw a fundraiser for him. Mount Prospect, Illinois’ own Brian Anderson, an Army veteran who lost his legs while fighting in Iraq, was recently written in for a guest appearance on the CBS hit show “CSI,” starring Gary Sinise and Melina Kanakarides. Davlantes is co-founder of the GMC with George Bliss and Terry Poulos.
CHI-TOWN & BEAN-TOWN: The GMC's Terry Poulos recently began writing a monthly general interest column for The Hellenic Voice in Boston, in addition to contributing to numerous other publications nationwide. Locally, he writes columns for The Greek Star on media and sports, in addition to feature articles on a number of subjects. Check out www.thehellenicvoice.com, whose editor is John Baglaneas. And a big hello to a few of our other Boston "cousins," broadcaster Ted Sarandis, play-by-play voice of Boston College basketball; Nick Tsiotis, co-author of "The Golden Greek" and sports columnist for The Hellenic Voice; and sports writer/broadcaster Teddy Panos of the Lowell Sun newspaper...Also, check out Terry's feature articles in the science supplement of www.thenationalherald.com in New York.

LINK TO US: www.greekmediaclub.com is always in search of new links to media-related sites. We’re currently under construction/reformation, but forever welcoming Greek media/cultural sites, mainstream efforts by our Hellenic friends, as well as links to media-realted sites created by our Phil-Hellene friends (non-Greek "cousins"). We’re planning even more offerings. The station will soon be posting video shorts of the morning duo at www.eDave.com. Also check out www.JaneMonzures.com ...Our Atlanta contingent apparently is fast growing.
